The reef is very fragile and is the island's only protection from the sea. When you touch the coral it begins to die, damaging the reef and its marine life Coral is an animal with an exoskeleton. It grows about 2.5 cm per year.
Be careful when snorkeling, swimming, or walking in the ocean, that you look beneath you before you put your feet on the sandy bottom. The lagoon is a nursery for marine life, and sting rays sometimes camouflage themselves by burrowing in the sand. A sting ray has a barbed tail which is used to defend itself, and the barb can cause a laceration and pain.
Fishing is not permitted from the beach or the jetties because the fish in the lagoon are part of the sightseeing attractions for our guests

Swimming and Snorkeling are some of the most favorite leisure activities in the Maldives. In order to safely enjoy these activities, the following safety guidelines are recommended:
There is always a current(s) in the lagoon, the direction(s) and strength(s) of which are affected by the season, wind, weather, tides, and other factors |
It is best to check the direction and strength(s) of the current(s) before entering the water |
It is best to always swim or snorkel with a buddy |
It is best to know your physical limits and not to exceed them |
It is best to stay within sight of the shoreline |
It is best not to enter water over your head, unless you are an experienced swimmer |
It is best to take special care if you enter the lagoon at night |
If you find yourself in a strong current, it is best not to tire yourself by trying to swim against it, rather swim diagonally across it, until you reach shore, further down the beach |
If you need help, call or wave, and if possible after standing up in the lagoon |
There is a long string of floating orange buoys connected by line, starting near the Jacuzzi Water Villas, and extending out into the Lagoon if you are swimming or snorkeling at the northern tip of the island. These buoys serve as a "lifeline" which you can hold onto while pulling yourself back to shore. |
For best enjoyment we would recommend to follow the Meeru Snorkeling Trail which is located in the lagoon at the northern tip of the island. A map of the snorkeling trail is placed by the beach at the North Reception and other strategic locations around the island
Please also read the information on the Beach Danger Signs, which are strategically placed at locations around the island's beaches
